Affogato Recipe (Espresso Ice Cream)

The Affogato is a classic Italian dessert consisting of sweet vanilla ice cream topped and “drowned” with hot espresso coffee.





This recipe is my new obsession, I was out for dinner with work one day in an Italian restaurant in Dublin city called Il Caffe Di Napoli (highly recommend the Pizza) and came across this on their dessert menu along with a shot of disarranno which is another favourite of mine.


If you are a coffee fan I highly recommend trying this.


The recipe is very simple:

  • Ice cream, or gelaton - 2/3 scoops

  • Espresso (or strong coffee) -1/2 a shot

  • Flavored liqueur or Port wine (optional) - 1/2 a shot

We recently tried it with Bourbon Icecream and yummm it was delicious. Also the flavoured liqueur we use is Disarranno.


The recommended amount is 2 shots of espresso but we actually only use half a shot because I think its plenty and a half a shot of the Disarranno.
